Peace campaigner Fredrick Ochieng has embarked on a 40-day cycling journey from Moyale, Marsabit County, to Busia County to promote peaceful elections ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Meru town during a stopover, Ochieng said the campaign seeks to sensitise Kenyans on the importance of maintaining peace before, during and after the elections amid concerns over political divisions and violence.
Ochieng said he began the journey in Moyale and had already travelled through Samburu and Isiolo counties before arriving in Meru. He plans to cover 14 counties before reaching his final destination in Busia town.
During the journey, he intends to visit churches and engage residents in villages and towns, using the stopovers to spread messages of peace, unity and political tolerance.
Ochieng said the initiative was inspired by concerns over growing political divisions, warning that differences in political opinion should not become a source of hostility among Kenyans.
“Nimeanza kuhamasisha kwasababu ya kuwa na uchaguzi salama, Taifa letu lishagawanyika, wanasiasa wanatumia vijana vibaya, nitahamasisha vijana kutoka Moyale hadi Busia, sio lazima tuuane ndio tupate power, ” Ochieng said in part.
He urged political leaders to exercise restraint in their public statements and campaigns, cautioning against remarks that could incite violence or threaten national stability.
The peace campaigner also appealed to young people to reject attempts by politicians to recruit them into activities that could cause chaos, intimidate opponents or disrupt peaceful political gatherings.
He emphasised that Kenyans have a collective responsibility to protect the country’s peace and democratic values regardless of their political affiliations.
Ochieng said elections should provide an opportunity for citizens to exercise their democratic rights freely and without fear or intimidation.
His cycling campaign seeks to encourage peaceful political competition and remind Kenyans that differences over leadership should not undermine national unity and peaceful coexistence as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.
