Moments Before Impact: Bus Driver Recounts Crash That Killed Cyrus Jirongo

Former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has died following a tragic road accident involving his Mercedes-Benz vehicle and a passenger bus operated by Climax Coaches.

According to an account given by the Climax Coaches bus driver, the crash occurred when Jirongo’s vehicle was exiting a petrol station and entered the highway without giving way to oncoming traffic. The driver stated that after joining the road, the Mercedes encountered heavy traffic on its lane, prompting it to veer into the opposite side of the road where the bus was approaching.

“The Mercedes came onto my lane and we collided head-on. The small car had one occupant, while my Climax Coaches bus was carrying 65 passengers,” the driver recounted.

He explained that he attempted to avoid the collision but feared the bus could lose control and plunge off the road.

“As I tried to evade him, I felt the bus might go off the road. I applied the brakes, but his vehicle came directly under the bus,” he said.

The driver added that it was only after police officers arrived at the scene that he learned the driver of the Mercedes was former MP Cyrus Jirongo.

Police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the crash, as authorities continue to urge motorists to observe traffic rules and exercise caution to prevent avoidable road accidents.
