Wetang’ula Hails Late Raila’s Democratic Spirit, Calls for Luhya Unity

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has praised veteran opposition leader the late Raila Odinga for his democratic values and ability to maintain personal relationships despite intense political rivalries.

Speaking at a public event, Wetang’ula described the late Raila as a leader who separated politics from personal friendship, saying political disagreements never prevented him from engaging cordially with his rivals.

“Raila was a man of democracy and respect. You would disagree, fight and clash politically, but by evening he would call and say, ‘My friend, come and let’s go watch an Arsenal match,’” Wetang’ula said.

The Speaker used the remarks to highlight the importance of tolerance and respect in Kenya’s political landscape, noting that political competition should not translate into personal animosity.

Wetang’ula also renewed calls for unity among the Luhya community, arguing that political cohesion would strengthen the region’s bargaining power and increase its chances of producing a future president.

“We have always supported leaders from other regions, and we also deserve an opportunity. But we must first unite as a community. When we are united and have the numbers, we become attractive partners to others,” he said.

The Speaker pointed to the community’s history of backing presidential candidates from across the political divide, including Raila Odinga, former President Mwai Kibaki, and President William Ruto.

“We supported Raila when he sought the presidency, we supported Kibaki, others supported Kenyatta, and in the last election we supported President Ruto. Now it is our turn to use these alliances and friendships to rise to the presidency,” Wetang’ula said.

His remarks are likely to reignite debate over the political future of the Western Kenya region and growing calls for greater unity among Luhya leaders ahead of the 2027 General Election.
