Karauri Tears Into Sakaja Over ODM Move, Says Party Switch Won’t Hide City Hall Failures

Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri has questioned Governor Johnson Sakaja’s decision to join the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), arguing that switching political parties will not change public perception of his performance in Nairobi.

Karauri’s criticism followed Sakaja’s formal entry into ODM on Monday, November 2, 2026, in a political development that could complicate the race for the party’s gubernatorial ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In his reaction, Karauri suggested that the governor was seeking to reposition himself politically rather than address concerns raised about his administration.

He argued that Sakaja secured the Nairobi governorship through the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in 2022 and should therefore be held accountable for the county government’s record.

“Sakaja won Nairobi on a UDA ticket. He’s not leaving UDA because of any problem with the party — he’s running to ODM because he thinks a new colour will make people forget his record.” Karauri Said in part.

The MP cited persistent challenges in the capital, including poor waste management, flooding, building collapses and concerns over bursary payments, as issues he believes will remain central to the governor’s performance assessment.

Karauri maintained that a change of political affiliation would not shield Sakaja from scrutiny over his time at City Hall.

“Collapsed buildings, flooding, garbage, unpaid bursaries, and four years of City Hall mess. Atashangaa sana. Changing parties will not erase the monumental failure.”

Karauri Eyes Party Nomination

Karauri has been building his profile as a potential challenger for the Nairobi governor’s seat, arguing that the county needs solutions to its persistent service-delivery challenges.

His interest in the ODM ticket means he could face the incumbent governor in the party’s nomination contest, should both pursue the same position.

The party’s eventual choice of candidate is likely to attract considerable attention, given the political weight of Nairobi and the stakes surrounding the 2027 gubernatorial race.
