One Dead, 14 Arrested as Police Condemn Political Violence in Kisumu and Nyahururu

According to preliminary investigations, a violent confrontation between two opposing groups in Kisumu City left one person dead, several others injured, nine motorcycles torched and a police vehicle damaged.

Police said eight suspects were arrested following swift intervention and have been placed in custody pending arraignment in court. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved.

Six Arrested After Nyahururu Rally Disruption

In Nyahururu Town, police said a group of individuals attempted to disrupt a political rally by throwing stones, injuring several members of the public.

Among those injured was Joseph Gitau, who sustained a chest injury. Police said he was treated and discharged.

Irungu Kang’ata’s driver Joseph Gitau was shot in the chest.

The service also dismissed reports that there had been a shooting during the incident.

“Contrary to some allegations, there was no shooting incident,” the statement said.

Police confirmed that six suspects were arrested in connection with the incident and remain in custody pending arraignment.

NPS Warns Against Political Violence

The National Police Service reiterated that no individual is above the law, regardless of political affiliation, social status or public office.

The service warned that anyone found engaging in violence, sponsoring criminal gangs, inciting supporters or disrupting lawful political gatherings would be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.

“Anyone found engaging in violence, sponsoring criminal gangs, inciting supporters or disrupting lawful gatherings will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
