Bobmil Under Fire in Explosive Mattress Price-Fixing Investigation

Bobmil Industries has been thrust into the spotlight once again following a sweeping investigation into alleged price-fixing practices in Kenya’s mattress industry, a probe that could become one of the most significant competition cases in the country’s manufacturing sector.

The controversy erupted after the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) carried out coordinated dawn raids on several leading mattress manufacturers, including Bobmil, Superform, Foam Mattress, Jumbo Foam Mattress and Vitafoam.

Investigators seized laptops, mobile phones, hard drives, sales records and other business documents as part of an inquiry into suspected anti-competitive conduct, including possible price-fixing and market allocation. CAK has stressed that the raids do not amount to proof of wrongdoing and that investigations are still ongoing.

What has made the case particularly sensational is the claim that the manufacturers may have inadvertently exposed their own cooperation.

According to court documents cited in recent reports, five of the companies jointly filed a petition seeking to stop the planned raids before abruptly withdrawing the case a day later. Competition experts say the unusual joint legal action by rival firms raised fresh questions about the extent of communication between the companies.

The probe intensified further after reports emerged that investigators are examining electronic communications, including WhatsApp messages and deleted files, in an effort to determine whether competitors shared sensitive market information.

Some reports have suggested that a WhatsApp group may be at the center of the investigation, though no official findings have been released by regulators.

For Bobmil, the latest allegations add to a series of high-profile challenges that have occasionally placed the company in the headlines.

In 2021, consumer complaints prompted scrutiny over claims that some mattresses marketed as high-density products did not meet customer expectations.

While the issue generated public debate, it never developed into a major enforcement action against the company.

The company also attracted attention in 2025 when a Gazette Notice from the Registrar of Companies appeared to indicate that Bobmil Industries had been dissolved.

The firm subsequently disputed reports suggesting it had shut down and maintained that it remained operational.

Now, however, the stakes are much higher. The mattress industry serves millions of Kenyan households, making any proven manipulation of prices a matter of significant public interest.

Under Kenya’s competition laws, companies found guilty of anti-competitive conduct can face substantial penalties.

As forensic examinations of the seized devices continue, consumers, regulators and industry players are waiting for answers.

Whether the investigation ultimately uncovers a coordinated cartel or clears the companies involved, the Bobmil saga has already become one of the most closely watched corporate scandals of 2026.
