Turkana School Gives Dropouts and Teen Mothers a Second Chance at Education

TURKANA SOUTH  – Learners who dropped out of school due to financial hardship, teenage pregnancy or failure to transition to secondary school have been given a fresh opportunity to complete their education following the establishment of Lokichar Day Secondary School in Turkana South.

The newly established institution is providing a second chance to students who were forced out of the education system, with all admitted learners benefiting from free tuition and other learning-related costs.

Acting Principal Ernest Onyango said the school was founded to ensure that no learner is denied an education because of poverty or personal circumstances.

“We want to give every learner an opportunity to return to school, complete their secondary education and sit for the national examinations,” Onyango said.

He noted that the initiative targets students who were unable to continue with their studies due to school fees challenges, teenage pregnancies and those who failed to transition to Grade Nine and subsequently dropped out.

School management said renovations of existing classrooms and the construction of additional learning facilities are underway to accommodate the growing number of students seeking admission.

The administration has also urged eligible learners to register as soon as possible ahead of next week’s national examination registration exercise.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, saying it offers hope to vulnerable learners while supporting government efforts to improve access to education and reduce school dropout rates in marginalized areas.
