Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse has launched a scathing attack on former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka over his political association with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, warning that the alliance could hurt Kalonzo’s ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking in Makindu, Makueni County, Mutuse questioned why Kalonzo chose to work with Gachagua instead of seeking an explanation from President William Ruto over the political fallout that led to the former deputy president’s departure from Ruto’s administration.

Mutuse claimed Gachagua and Ruto fell out because of what he described as Gachagua’s confrontational style and alleged tribal politics.

“Huyu Gachagua alikuwa ni mtu wa William Ruto wakaachana kwasababu alikuwa mtu wa kisirani na ukabila. Wewe Kalonzo Musyoka badala ya kwenda kuuliza William Ruto huyu mtu mliachana kwanini ukaenda ukajiingiza huko.”

Mutuse went on to question Gachagua’s claim of commanding millions of votes and having the financial capacity to mount a presidential campaign, arguing that constitutional requirements could complicate such ambitions.

“Nikutangazie ni mtu wa kisirani, madharau, leo amesema ako na Kura Million 12 na ako na pesa na ataomba kiti ya Urais na katiba haimkubalii.” Mwengi Mutuse said.

He further claimed that Gachagua’s presidential ambitions could eventually put him at odds with Kalonzo.

“Na hiyo ni kumaanisha huko mbeleni hataunga Kalonzo Mkono.”

Mutuse tells Kalonzo to reconsider 2027 strategy

Mutuse urged Kalonzo to reconsider his political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections, proposing that he, Kalonzo and Ruto could instead negotiate a political arrangement that would secure what he described as a favourable political retirement for the former vice president.

“Kalonzo akae chini na Mutuse tukae chini na Ruto tupange yeye huko mbeleni akuwe na retirement nzuri.”He said.

He also used a reference to the road connecting Kyuso and Tseikuru to underscore his proposal.

“Barabara yake ya kutoka Kyuso-Tseikuru tumtengenezee aende nyumbani vizuri, Mwengi Mutuse aongoze, na tukiongoza tumchunge.”

Mutuse’s remarks come as political parties and leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with alliances and potential presidential coalitions increasingly shaping political debate across the country.

Mutuse dismisses tribal politics

The Kibwezi West MP also argued that Kenyan voters were increasingly moving away from choosing leaders primarily because they come from their communities.

“Wananchi wa Kenya wameerevuka wakati wa kuchagua kiongozi kwasababu ametoka kwa kabila yenu umeisha.”

He challenged political leaders seeking support in Ukambani to demonstrate what they had delivered for the region during their time in government.

“Wananchi wa Kenya wanataka viongozi ambao wamefanya maendeleo.”

Turning his attention to Kalonzo’s record in government, Mutuse challenged the former vice president to point to projects he personally delivered in the region.

“Umekuwa kwa serikali, ukakuwa minister na ukakuwa Vice President tuonyeshe kitu kimoja ulileta hapa Kibwezi tukuheshimu.”

Mutuse highlights Ruto-backed projects in Makueni

Mutuse used ongoing government projects in Makindu and Kibwezi to defend President Ruto’s development record in the region, arguing that voters should assess leaders based on tangible projects rather than ethnic politics.

He cited the completion of a market project in Makindu valued at Sh75 million, an affordable housing project estimated at Sh2.2 billion, and electricity projects worth nearly Sh700 million.

He also said the government was initiating another major market project in Kibwezi Town at a cost of Sh75 million.

“In Makindu, through the support of President William Ruto, we have the ongoing KSh 2.2 billion Affordable Housing Project, a 75M modern market , the KSh 100 million water project for the town, KSh 250 million KMTC hostels, electrification projects and many other development initiatives” Mutuse said in part.

Mutuse’s comments are likely to intensify political debate in Ukambani, where Kalonzo Musyoka has maintained a significant political base and where alliances ahead of 2027 could prove crucial in determining the region’s preferred presidential candidate.
