Nico Williams Breaks Silence After Fresh World Cup Injury, Reveals Painful 18-Month Battle

Spain winger Nico Williams has shared an emotional statement after suffering a fresh injury during Spain’s FIFA World Cup clash against Uruguay, describing it as “one of the worst days” of his life.

The Athletic Bilbao star sustained a moderate muscle injury to the adductor (groin) of his right leg following a late challenge from Uruguay midfielder Nicolás de la Cruz in Spain’s 1-0 Group H victory.

Spain’s medical team confirmed the injury after post-match examinations, with Williams expected to miss at least the Round of 32 clash as his recovery is assessed.

In a heartfelt statement posted on social media, Williams revealed that he has endured an injury-plagued spell over the last 18 months, beginning with persistent pubic symphysis pain (pubalgia) that affected even the simplest daily activities.

“Today is one of the worst days of my life,” Williams wrote. “I’ve gotten injured again after a very tough year, one in which the pubic symphysis pain won many battles against me, but not the war.”

The 28-year-old explained that the condition left him living with constant pain, making everyday tasks such as getting in and out of a car or even using the bathroom difficult.

After finally overcoming the chronic groin problem through “hard work, sacrifice and responsibility,” Williams said he then suffered a hamstring injury before being struck by another setback against Uruguay.

The Spanish international blamed the latest injury on a challenge he believes could have been avoided.

“Yesterday, I was caused a new injury after an action in which a fellow professional acted out of frustration, discontent and sadness over the situation he was going through. It was a play that, in my opinion, could have been avoided because it was completely unnecessary,” he said.

Despite the disappointment, Williams vowed to fight his way back.

“But this won’t stop me either. I know God has a plan for me, and I’ll keep fighting until the very last moment to get back to doing what I love most: playing soccer, being happy, and bringing joy to many.”

The winger thanked fans for their support, ending his message with a hopeful promise: “The story isn’t over—we’ll see each other as soon as possible in this World Cup.”

Spain have not ruled Williams out of the remainder of the tournament, with his availability depending on how quickly he recovers from the right adductor muscle injury and how far La Roja progress in the competition.
