Tanga Horror: Grave Robbers Steal Head of Deceased in Suspected Ritual Attack

Police in Tanzania’s Tanga Region are investigating a chilling incident in which unknown individuals exhumed a grave and stole the head of a buried man in what authorities suspect could be a ritual-related crime.

The Tanga Regional Police Commander, Alimachius Mchunguzi, confirmed the incident took place on the morning of July 18, 2025, in Mgela Village, Kilindi District.

The grave belonged to Mohamed Athumani Mjaila, aged 85, who had died on July 11 and was laid to rest the following day in the family’s private burial site.

According to Commander Mchunguzi, local residents raised the alarm after discovering the disturbed grave.

Initial fears were that the entire body had been stolen. However, upon further examination, it was confirmed that only the deceased’s head had been removed, with the rest of the body left in the grave.

“Yes, the grave was found exhumed and the head taken. The body was left behind,” the regional police chief stated. “We suspect the incident could be linked to acts of witchcraft or traditional rituals.”

Authorities have launched a full investigation and a manhunt is underway to bring the perpetrators to justice. Meanwhile, the shocking event has left villagers in fear, with many expressing concern over a possible rise in occult-related crimes in the area.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as efforts continue to uncover those responsible for the grotesque act.
