Vaginal Tightening ? Pharmacists Warn Women Against Using Cetirizine

A viral social media claim suggesting that cetirizine, a common allergy medication, can tighten vaginal muscles has prompted a warning from the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK), which has cautioned women against using the drug for purposes other than its approved medical use.

The claim, which has been circulating online, appears to be based on the drug’s ability to cause dryness as a possible side effect, with some social media users suggesting that reduced vaginal lubrication translates to tighter vaginal muscles.

However, pharmacists say the two are not the same thing.

In a statement addressing the viral claims, the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya explained that vaginal dryness does not amount to vaginal tightening and that reduced lubrication does not strengthen vaginal muscles or change vaginal anatomy.

Cetirizine is an antihistamine taken orally to relieve allergy symptoms. It is not approved, tested or recommended for vaginal tightening.

The difference between dryness and tightening

The confusion surrounding the online trend appears to stem from the fact that antihistamines can cause dryness in some people.

However, vaginal lubrication and vaginal muscle tone are different physiological processes.

Lubrication helps reduce friction during sexual activity, while vaginal muscle tone relates to the muscles and supporting structures surrounding the vagina.

Consequently, experiencing dryness does not mean that the vaginal muscles have become tighter.

The PSK has warned that using cetirizine based on unverified claims could expose people to unnecessary medication risks without delivering the promised results.

Pharmacists warn against viral medical misinformation

The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya has also raised concerns about the speed at which unverified medical advice spreads on social media, particularly when it involves medication and intimate health.

The society maintains that medicines should only be used for their approved indications and under appropriate professional guidance.

Cetirizine is intended to manage allergic conditions, not to alter vaginal anatomy or improve vaginal muscle tone.

The warning comes amid growing circulation of online health and beauty claims that encourage people to experiment with readily available medicines without understanding their intended use or possible side effects.
