Suspect Arrested Over Alleged Social Media Posts on Protected Persons

Detectives have arrested a woman in Mombasa County over allegations of publishing sensitive information on social media relating to the movements of protected persons, in a case now being investigated as a potential threat to national security.

The suspect, Halima Ngache, popularly known online as Princess Halima, was arrested during an intelligence-led operation conducted in the Kazandani area, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

In a statement, the DCI said investigations linked the suspect to an X (formerly Twitter) account allegedly used to publish information concerning the movements of protected persons.

Authorities said the alleged posts are being investigated for possible implications on national security, although they did not disclose the identity of the protected persons or specify the content of the information shared.

Halima is currently in police custody and is undergoing processing pending her arraignment in court.

The arrest comes amid increased scrutiny of online activity, with security agencies warning that certain social media posts may have legal consequences if they are deemed to endanger public safety or compromise the security of protected individuals.

While reaffirming that the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, the DCI reminded Kenyans that the right is subject to legal limitations.

“The Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, but this right must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law,” the agency said.

The DCI further urged members of the public to avoid sharing information that could compromise the safety of protected persons or incite public unrest, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding national security.

The suspect is expected to be presented before court once investigations and processing are complete.
