The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) and the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) have reaffirmed their commitment to improving journalists’ welfare, enhancing election safety and defending press freedom ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The commitment was made during a meeting between the Media Council of Kenya and the Kenya Union of Journalists Governing Council, where the two institutions agreed to strengthen collaboration on issues affecting media professionals.
Speaking after the meeting, Media Council of Kenya Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo said the partnership would help create a safer and more supportive working environment for journalists, particularly during the election period.
“This partnership reinforces our shared commitment to protecting journalists and ensuring they operate in a safe, dignified environment, especially as we approach election year 2027,” said Omwoyo.
The two organisations also announced plans to hold a landmark conference in November, which will focus on journalists’ welfare, improving terms and conditions of service, and investing in human capital development within the media industry.
Kenya Union of Journalists Secretary-General Eric Oduor said the conference would provide a platform for addressing long-standing challenges affecting journalists.
“We look forward to partnering on a landmark conference that will be held in November to address journalist welfare, improve terms and conditions of service, and invest in human capital development. The Media Council of Kenya’s regulatory role is invaluable in driving these critical conversations,” said Oduor.
The partnership will also include joint efforts to tackle impunity against journalists, strengthen industry coordination and promote the safety of media practitioners across the country.
According to the Media Council of Kenya, the collaboration seeks to ensure journalists can carry out their work freely, professionally and without intimidation, particularly during election coverage when media practitioners often face heightened risks.
The renewed partnership comes as stakeholders in Kenya’s media industry continue to push for stronger protections for journalists, improved working conditions and greater respect for press freedom.
