Infantino praises Iran after 2-2 draw with New Zealand amid World Cup challenges

FIFA President Gianni Infantino delivered an emotional message of support to Iran’s national football team following their dramatic 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their opening Group G match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match, played in Los Angeles, saw Iran twice come from behind to earn a valuable point in a contest that was overshadowed by the challenges facing the team away from the pitch.

New Zealand struck first in the seventh minute through Elijah Just, who capitalized on an early opportunity to give the All Whites the lead.

Iran responded in the 32nd minute when veteran defender Ramin Rezaeian found the back of the net to level the scores at 1-1.

Just restored New Zealand’s advantage shortly after the break with his second goal of the evening in the 55th minute. However, Iran once again showed resilience as Mohammad Mohebbi scored the equalizer in the 64th minute after being set up by Rezaeian. The entertaining encounter ended 2-2, with both teams settling for a point.

Following the final whistle, Infantino visited the Iranian dressing room and praised the players for their determination and character.

“Tonight’s match was difficult, and with a little bit of luck, you could have come away with the victory,” he told the players.

“You have shown your families, your friends, and the entire world that you belong at the World Cup. You are players capable of delivering performances at the highest level.”

His message carried added significance given the difficult circumstances surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament.

Since the outbreak of conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel earlier this year, the Iranian team has faced numerous logistical and political challenges.

The squad was forced to move its training base from the United States to Mexico, while several support staff members reportedly encountered visa difficulties.

Iran captain Mehdi Taremi and head coach Amir Ghalenoei have publicly spoken about the obstacles facing the team, with the coach describing Iran as one of the most disadvantaged sides at the tournament.

Acknowledging those struggles, Infantino encouraged the players to remain strong.

“I understand what you are going through, but you are stronger than every challenge you face. Through your resilience and determination, you are sending a powerful message to the whole world,” he said.

For Iran, the draw against New Zealand was about more than just football. It was a statement of perseverance from a team carrying the hopes of a nation while navigating extraordinary circumstances both on and off the field.
