Civil society activists in Tana River County have been urged to strengthen their unity to effectively advocate for human rights, promote accountability, and address social challenges affecting local communities.
Speaking in Hola Town, Vocal Africa officer Walid Sketti said a united civil society movement is better placed to defend the rights of citizens, hold leaders accountable, and foster inclusive development.
Sketti said Vocal Africa engaged activists in Tana River because of what he described as persistent injustices affecting the county.
“One of the reasons we have come to meet civil society activists in Tana River is because of the injustices and oppression that continue to affect the county. These include land disputes, livestock theft and the misappropriation of public funds by the county government,” said Sketti.
He called on civil society organisations to work closely with government institutions, development partners, community leaders and residents to promote peace, good governance and sustainable development across the county.
Sketti added that stronger collaboration among activists and other stakeholders would help address social injustices, amplify the voices of local communities and contribute to building a more just, equitable and inclusive society.
