Kenyans Can Now Apply and Download Birth Certificates Online as Government Launches Digital System

Kenyans can now apply for and access birth certificates online following the rollout of a new digital birth registration platform aimed at simplifying the process and improving government service delivery.

The e-Birth Notification System, introduced by the Department of Civil Registration Services (CRS) under the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, became operational in Nairobi on May 1, 2026.

The new system replaces the traditional paper-based registration process with a fully digital platform designed to reduce delays, minimize physical visits to government offices and make birth registration services more accessible to citizens.

Through the platform, parents will receive electronic notifications through SMS and email, allowing them to track the registration process and access services more conveniently.

According to the government, the digital system will significantly reduce the time required to issue birth certificates while easing the logistical challenges previously experienced by families seeking the documents.

The initiative has already onboarded 372 health facilities, which will support the electronic registration of births before the system is expanded to other parts of the country.

The nationwide rollout is expected to introduce a self-service approach where citizens can complete birth registration processes digitally without necessarily visiting Civil Registration Offices.

The government says the reform is part of broader efforts to digitize public services, enhance efficiency and improve access to essential documents for Kenyans.

The move comes as the country continues to implement digital transformation initiatives aimed at making government services faster, easier and more accessible to citizens.
